The other day I was sending my resume out to a client and realized I hadn't updated it in quite some time. I added several new client names to the resume, and I realized I was not a newbie any more! Do you remember to update your resume regularly?

Funny you should mention this! I was looking through a suitcase full (yes, that's where I keep them!) of my print publication complimentary copies two days ago and found some publications that I totally forgot to add to my resume. I forgot to update it even then until you just reminded me. biggrin.gif

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by all of the opportunities in web writing?

Constantly and every day... oh yes! I often have to get picky about what I want to do. Since my writing is a second career after my business, I have to always be careful that I'm not biting off more than I'm able to chew. So far so good for about a year now, but before that I was totally burned out.

When you feel that another site is stealing your content you should contact their host. Some may advise that you try to contact the owner of the offending site first, but if they are stealing your content chances are they will not respond.

This reminds me of what I did a couple of years ago. I found that a professor was using some of my work in his classes and announced it to his students via his web page. I didn't know how to handle it so I thought I wasn't in the mood to "go the rounds" with him. I wrote and told him I'm honored that he'd use my work with his classes, but since it's copyrighted material, my normal reprint rate per word is... $(whatever it was at the time). Told him where to pay the invoice and my content was removed the next day. Yes, I'm a tricky one! laugh.gif

Where is the best money to be made within the realm of freelancing or copywriting? Do those of you who write full-time make the most on article writing, copywriting, blogging, or something else?

I started out with print publications and I still like doing that once in a while. The cover letters are a pain
but there's something about getting those checks in the mail that just can't compare with an online paypal paycheck.

I love reading blogs, but I spend way too much time reading posts when I should be working. I read a blog, end up clicking a link in a post to someone else's blog, and time gets away from me. I think I'm a blog addict smile.gif Anyone else have this problem?

There's only one blog that I read daily... sometimes many times daily rolleyes.gif and one that I check a few times a week. Another blog is about once a week, so that's all that I really follow. I'm scared to check others out because I don't want to get into the habit of doing that when I should be working. I doubt that *that* little plan will work for too long!

great with the opening and the ending but then I get too impatient when I'm supposed to be filling in the
middle. rolleyes.gif

I do want to write a Christian fiction book. It will be a mystery, with a rather comical lead character. When will I find the time to write this book? Well, that is also a mystery smile.gif

This sounds like fun! Mysteries with comical/multi-faceted characters seem to be a very popular genre. Do you have any of it started yet, or is the whole idea for "someday" without a word of it written yet?

I am fortunate that my husband supports my writing endeavors. Our kids are all adults, and they're good with it too, although they do interrupt me a lot when they are visiting. I have heard some writers say that their families are not supportive, and some have husbands who tell them they should get a "real" job. What about you? Do you have good family support?

I have a lot of family support, too. I've never heard the "real job" song and dance fortunately. One little issue I do have is that people seem to think that since I run a business from home, I can just pick up and "do lunch" or take time for a long visit. Nope, not possible, so I just have to gently remind them. smile.gif

I love the internet, and it is vital to my work, but I've really had to discipline myself to keep from wasting my work hours on personal emails, online banking, and reading newspapers. Do you struggle with keeping yourself focused on work-related things when it comes to the internet? If so, what are your favorite distractions?

Lots of things distract me when I'm trying to work, but the 'net isn't really one of them. I mostly stay focused to what I'm there to do. I think if I'd try to multi-task, I might run into a problem, however. laugh.gif

I work best in the early morning. In the past I used to get up at 4 for that very purpose. I don't do that anymore, but I'm usually hard at work by 7, sometimes earlier. I just can't seem to get anything done after dinner and I'm definitely NOT a night owl. rolleyes.gif

No, this isn't a weather report rolleyes.gif but it's about the "other" kind of writing I do in addition to solid copywriting for businesses. How do you all deal with the lead times for print publications and having to write about summer beaches and picnics when the snow is falling like I'm seeing today?

I really don't mind writing about Christmas in June or July. I love Christmas! But I do have a wee little issue with going from carols and wrapping presents in "real life" to writing about sunburn the same day. Maybe I'm just too fickle. laugh.gif I *do* it and it's not a huge problem, but writing about Christmas in July is a LOT more fun!

Mornin' Everyone... I did it, I took the plunge with a blog (for my business, not personal yet).
I want to learn about the adsense things and what people talk about "monetizing" if that's the
term... a blog. Can anyone point me in the right direction to learn these things?
Thanks a bunch in advance!

Although acknowledgement and judgement are preferred in England, spell them acknowledgment and judgment for a U.S. audience.

Great post there, anirban! There are quite a few differences, yes, but it's nothing that causes problems
with someone understanding. I even "catch myself" using British spelling sometimes with the "our" instead
of "or." smile.gif Until a few years ago, I was spelling it judgement and finally looked it up to find that either
was acceptable... that was good to know. biggrin.gif

I'm one of those people who write for money but then I'll write other stuff for my own enjoyment. I'm not miserable when I work on other people's project. Its better than a lot of other types of work. I'm also, however, not all that rewarded writing on subjects about which I can't say I give two hoots.

My writing-for-me has taken a backseat lately, but there are those times when that happens.

I know this may be pathetic to anyone who is doing what s/he loves for a living, but I see the two different types of writing as two completely different things. I have to say that there are times when the air starts to leak out of the balloon as far as writing for me goes. Sometimes after spending a lot of time on other people's stuff one doesn't have a whole lot of time/energy left. I do think, though, that seeing the work-writing and the me-writing as two completely different things helps keep a person from blurring the two into one, big, muddled, lack of inspiration. smile.gif

I think this is quite wise. I wish I could do that more often. Writing is what I do, and if I could do the
9 to 5 "write for the paycheck" thing and then have some "now let's REALLY have fun and do some fiction" time, too, I think I'd enjoy it very much. I don't see it as pathetic at all! smile.gif

Well nowdays I found that many new writer offer very low rates like $10/hour which creat problems for writer. Samethings happen with Article writing too when I started writing, I am getting $0.06 to $0.15 per words but nowdays you would find out $0.01 offers.

I have seen some *horrible* rates around the 'net that people are actually accepting. Even this
shockingly low 1 cent that you mention is better than I've seen. People (granted, I think it's mostly
people from other countries) are writing like 800 or 1,000 words for TWO DOLLARS! I'd rather
take my metal detector along the road and find change instead of selling my writing for that!

You'll hear the argument that "we need clips for the portfolio!" but people who do that are just
adding to problem their colleagues are facing with the low pay. If no one would work for peanuts,
clients wouldn't OFFER peanuts.

Why do you think it sounds crazy? I think it sounds wonderful and I wish you a world of luck

I got into the journalism articles and other writing and the manuscripts got put on the proverbial
back burner. Maybe sometime I'll pull them out again. laugh.gif

Okay, colleagues... I thought I already saw or started a thread about this but I can't find it anywhere.
Sooo... I'll try again.

Which common grammar mistakes drive you up a wall?

The one I hate seeing most is the misuse of "you're" and "your"... it really isn't difficult to tell them apart
and I see things like "your welcome" positively all over the net. Makes me cringe.

My second cringer is misuse of they're/their/there.

Yet again a nice thread and thanks! Luckily i don't have much problem with punctuations. But sometimes i do feel i am in trouble when it comes to complex sentences with commas. But now after seeing the site you posted here i will try to keep the things i learnt. Hope now things going to be easier for me to decide where to put a comma and where not to

Commas are *very* misused everywhere we look. What's worse is that some of the usages don't
really have a rule that's set in stone.

Isn't a copywriter's job to write the copy? I never imagined it included printing or graphics design. I suppose ad and logo design would be a beneficial add-on to your business, but is it necessary?

Yes, this is what I thought, too. The copywriter writes the copy and the client uses printers and webmasters for the brochure or website, but the copywriter isn't responsible for being the webmaster. If you're taking over an entire brochure or something, I really can't answer this, either, but best of luck with it!

2) If you write for money, you’ll never enjoy writing again.

I can see that this one might be true if I'd not write what I love to write. I don't do well with
assignments and I turn down jobs often where it would involve someone telling me what to write
and when. I like to have my own time schedule. I can deal with "we'll need this within two weeks"
but "have this to us by Friday at precisely 2 p.m. or we cut the pay in half" is somethingI make sure
I don't get involved in... I wouldn't enjoy it too much if I'd have to constantly answer to someone
other than myself where my writing is concerned.

I've actually had a buddy of mine who was removed from google's index for quite a while for this actually. He was into dupe content sites for a while which probably put him on google's radar. These days I'm kind of paranoid of messing with google's terms because so much of my site's livelihood (both visitors and revenue) depends on it at this point.

Yes... there really are some things that aren't worth messing with. For someone who's running
a website, it's a risk that just sounds too high to take. (I haven't heard about it before now either.)

I think if you want to get the best info on unique links (true visitors) to your website that google analytics is the best free tool out there. Its very accurate but dont think that google isnt getting anything out of it.
they store all relevant information and can use it later for their future clients to help them in their advertising campaign.

This is very interesting and I'll have to check it out! We always have to sort through all the bot fluff
with the website stats before we can truly check out the "real" hits... this sounds like something that
would work for my business. Thanks!

Would you say you work to live or live to work?

Personally I think it's essential that you enjoy what you do, as there is nothing worse than doing the same boring job day after day. However I don't think I will ever be one of those people who becomes so obsessed by work that it becomes my life.

I have some workaholics in my family. I do admire them for the hard work, but I often just wish they would take the time to enjoy the rewards sometimes.

Nice question here! Well... I'll have to be the nonconformist and say that my answer would have to be "neither." I don't actually work to live (write, I mean) but I don't live to work either. I write when I want to and set my own schedule so it's probably the best of both worlds. If I really need to choose one, I guess I'd work to live and use free time for other things.
