Hi!

I'm running a test site and there's this link to a free eBook i put in the home page. The links been up for 2 weeks and the site's still in disarray but I've already submitted it to the SEs and directories. Well, when I added a few more free ebook links yesterday I found that the first link has received nearly 400 clicks. Makes me wonder, when bots follow that link, are they counted as clicks by CMSes? Thanks.

Sure, bots follow links - they are recorded as "hits". So when
you see 50,000 hits and only 450 unique visitors, you can
understand why "hits" don't mean squat, really. A hit pertains
to each and every file "hit" at your website by the bot or visitor.

It is the reason for all those new, "type in what you see"
verifications everywhere. Directories, groups, networks want
real people signing up, not phishing bots or crawlers.

If it is a link, one leg of the spider will shoot off and follow it,
so to speak.

Does this help?

Ooops, forgot, I got sidetracked...

You can tell the robots what you want them to do as
far as indexing (or whatever) with a robots.txt file and
apply your instructions to the equation when reading
your stats.

Since content of the robots.txt file tells the search engine
bots or crawlers what to do and when, when they visit
your site, you can actually control the numbers to a
certain extent. Do a little research, it's pretty easy to
follow along at most websites that post explanations of
this sort of thing.

Blessings.

Hey, thanks. biggrin.gif

Everything's clearer now. Don't have much time yet to get deeper into these bot stuff but thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I thought somebody was already visiting and I don't even have a proper header yet. biggrin.gif

Wow Verb that is a lot of neat information. I have heard of bots but was never quite sure what they were, how they worked etc. Now I know, learn something new every day! Thanks!

I knew those verifications were to tell if you were human or not, but I never understood how a "bot" could have gotten that far in the registration. Now I understand. Thanks, Verb!

Hey Verb, to carry this conversation a little further, if you will oblige.... Do you find it beneficial to direct the spiders to revisit more often? Does it depend on how frequently you add new content to your website?

As I understand it, spiders crawl the more popular (higher PR?) sites more frequently than less popular ones. Thus, the more popular would get re-cached by the SE more frequently. That would be a good thing if they have new content. Can a newer site 'trick' the bots into visiting the site more frequently to help improve search engine ranking?

Bots do follow links. Bots can fil up forms and register accounts as well. That is the reason we have those verification text so as to identify from bots and human. And we have those activation links also sent to our email to stop useless account registrations. Till now it has been successful but i am sure Bots going to have their way out from these in later years to come. Hopefully by then we will be having new techniques to stop bot, i guess.

I think if you want to get the best info on unique links (true visitors) to your website that google analytics is the best free tool out there. Its very accurate but dont think that google isnt getting anything out of it.
they store all relevant information and can use it later for their future clients to help them in their advertising campaign.

This is very interesting and I'll have to check it out! We always have to sort through all the bot fluff
with the website stats before we can truly check out the "real" hits... this sounds like something that
would work for my business. Thanks!

Bots do follow links and it will called as a hits. But I don't have much deeper information on this. But if you want to know more about this than open an account with Google Analytics they will show you all information like hits, visitors etc.
