Alright not so novice copywriters, I want to start my own website. Do I have to have a business license to do this? If I am selling my work, can I do so with this license? I am at a dilemma with this topic. Please advice me!

I am hoping someone can answer this thread. I want to start my own website, but don't know if I need a license. Maybe the question is too obvious!

I found this answer for you just in case you were wondering. Yes, you need a business license to sell anything.

You do not need a business license to sell anything, from what I have researched and come to understand. I mean as in a named business "Bob's Copywriting" or anything like that. You are able to work as self-employed under your own social security number. Freelancing does not require a business license, just like a consultant. If you are charging sales tax, you need to register for that.

The second answer on that Yahoo page is the correct one. Check out your state's website for specific laws though.

When I first started freelancing I checked into this, and I was told that I would not have to have a business license for selling writing services. I don't have a website yet but have been told that no license is necessary for offering writing services on the web either.

I once sold ad space on a page of mine for a large chunk of money to a relatively large company through a professional advertising agency that they hired. I remember that they were unable to write a check that is not addressed to a business. So perhaps if you are expecting relations with somewhat large online businesses it is a good idea to get the liscense anyway. Not sure if this was just company policy or something else though.

Hello,

Web-based businesses offer tremendous flexibility and freedom for entrepreneurs. However, lacking a storefront doesn't excuse a website owner from neglecting to follow state and local business licensing regulations. Though many website owners launch their businesses as moonlighting opportunities or as hobbies, registering for the correct business licenses can prevent misunderstandings and even penalties as a website grows in popularity.

Thanks,

used cars
