Hi everyone - I was trained as a copywriter a few years ago but have only written a little copy for websites ever since. Unfortunately the course I followed did not train me properly in website copy. I am likely to get some work producing website copy very soon from other copywriters but I am worried that I will be expected to do something I don't know about e.g. SEO - will I automatically be expected to do that? How about navigation and HTML? Anything else? I would very much appreciate it if people would be kind enough to let me know where my responsiblity as a copywriter starts and where it ends, as soon as possible if you would please. Very many thanks for any help.

Hello Beverley,

First thing I'd like to say is don't panic. Navigation and HTML are normally matters for web designers and programmers. You will no doubt develop an awareness of these elements as you go on but don't worry too much about them for now.

It's a good idea to try and learn about SEO Web Copy. But please don't panic. 6 months ago I knew very little about this. Now I have a lot more confidence. The main principle of web copy is fairly simple: provide the same great copy you normally would but make an impression quickly, or your browser will leave. SEO Web Copy takes things a stage further where you have to incorporate specific keywords within your copy. Here it's useful to know a little about HTML. Again, it's quite simple. Your HTML programmer uses headings and titles, just like a copywriter. Practice will help you incorporate your keywords into your headings/titles and text. Do some research into recommended 'keyword density'. Once you start working with programmers and designers (they are only human), they'll be able to show you what they need from you. It's usually a Title Tag and Description Tag for each specific web page. And they may ask you to show them the order of importance of your paragraphs (information hierarchy). This will help them identify their own 'header tags'. These tell the search engines what each page is all about and will be enforced by your on-page copy.

I reckon there are some good heads on here who can help you with proper information sources. I just picked stuff up along the way and I hope that helped a little.

All the best,

Mike.

Mike - you're gold dust. Now that I have read your note and have read some notes about SEO which includes all of the above I feel a bit better about it. Very many thanks.

Reading around online about SEO copywriting is a great way to learn more. Find a few blogs you like and read them every so often. If you're a good writer it should be relatively easy to translate your skills into website copywriting.

Website copywriting is the smarter way to promote your business online. There are so many companies around you in the competitive world, the success of your business depends on how your are presenting yourself against your competitors.

Website copywriting is writing the content for your website which should be SEO friendly. A SEO friendly website will be able to achieve good rank on search engines. You should have some technical knowledge about HTML. If you're a good writer it should be relatively easy to translate your skills into website copywriting.
