I have been stuck with a PageRank of 0 and although I am mainly working on adding content I am starting to get worried that I won't be able to increase my status and get more attention, jobs, etc..

What methods are available for increasing your PageRank? I've heard conflicting views about different practices and one of my friends went from a 4 to a 0 because of some kind of back linking he was using to increase his traffic.

I've been researching this a bit for my own purposes, and the idea that appeals to me most is article placement. I haven't done this for my own site, but I've written articles for other marketers who are doing this. Here's a link to an article discussing the concept: http://www.graphic-design.com/Web/increase_rank.html

Page Rank has to do with incoming links only.

How is your targeted traffic? Look at your traffic and don't worry
about PR until you have a decent amount of targeted traffic.

Blessings.

True, PR is a function of off-site SEO or inbounds. Article placement helps. Try also submitting your site to free directories, especially non-reciprocal ones. For traffic building and networking, entrecard helps too.

As you are still in the process of learning how this works, it will take quite a long time to go up the ranking.Mastering SEO is perhaps one of the most difficult things to accomplish.

If you are starting out there are few things that you can do,

1) Research your niche and see what the competetion is upto.
For example :
If your niche focuses on learning guitar , do a google for various terms related to learning guitars.
Try searches like : Learn guitar, guitar tutorials, guitar classes and other searches which come to mind.

For each search, go to the first 3 results and then have a look at the website. At the bottom of each website or somewhere on the website, there should be "links". This page will give you all the information about the inbound links from various sites. This is very critical information as this gives you an idea how many quality links each website has.
To keep it simple, you need to have roughly 20% better links than the first. Higher the PR of the website linking to you, better is the inbound link and better are your chances to get indexed by google.

2) Keep content as fresh as possible and updated on a daily basis.
3) Write articles at free ezine article directories with back links to your website.

These should help you get indexed faster on google. Ofcourse there are a million other things that you can do, but hopefully these should help.

My website was No.1 ranking in my niche. It is still at No.1 today among over 450,000 Pages.
Try googling for " Forex Trading Journal Software", you should see my website ranked first there, even though my website is offline and I havent run it for over 1 year. (Elogfx Software which was designed and programmed with my partner). My website was at No1 for long time but has since be de-indexed as its off line now.

It was a niche website and doing pretty well, I stopped as I have diversified into other things.

Getting ranking on google is very tough. it takes time and effort. I offer services to small biz websites to get better google ranking. Let me know if I can help, pm me.

Hello,
There are numerous tips floating around in webmaster circles about how to improve your ranking in search engine results on Google.
1. Get Those Inbound Links
Since Google ranks your pages according to the number of links pointing at your page, it stands to reason that you should try to get as many links pointing at your pages as possible. This is so obvious that I'm only mentioning it for completeness sake.
2. Your Title Tag
Google seems to give weight to the title of your page. By title, I mean the text that is sandwiched between the HTML <TITLE> tags in the <HEAD> section of your web page. If you use a Web editor that automatically inserts a title like "New Page", remember to change it to some meaningful text with your keywords inside to reap the benefit of this feature.

thanks!!
