Meet the father of propaganda
June 12th, 2007 · 3 Comments · Tags: Audio & Video · Persuasion & InfluenceFew marketers and copywriters are familiar with the name Edward Bernays. He’s not your average guru. But his work is legendary and even today, we are all affected by his influence without knowing it.
For more than half a century, Bernays (nephew of Sigmund Freud), pioneered the techniques and strategies of shaping and manipulating public opinion. He called his craft “engineering of consent”.
Sigmund Freud’s daughter, Anna, and Bernays provided the centerpiece philosophy for the US government, big business, and the CIA to develop techniques to manage and control the minds of the American people. But this was not a cynical exercise in manipulation. Those in power believed that the only way to make democracy work and create a stable society was to repress the savage barbarism that lurked just under the surface of normal American life - through the persistent and methodical modification of public opinion.
This powerful documentary details the life and work of Bernays… enjoy!

Important note:
Bernays made a career out of being an outspoken proponent of propaganda for both political and corporate manipulation of the population. His techniques are brutally powerful and when applied ethically to business, they can be devastatingly effective… and few know this, but he detailed all of them in a small how-to book called “Propaganda”. I strongly recommend every copywriter and marketer to study his book - Click here to get it now.

Wow! This is serious stuff.
Amazing to think how much we act or behave today could be shaped by unknown persons without us even realizing it.
Makes you wonder…

This is a terrific documentary. I wrote up Bernays and recommended this several issues back in my ezine Copywriter’s Roundtable. I second the recommendation here — everyone in or out of the marketing field should watch it.
Read Cialdini’s book “Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion” too.
