I'm a copywriter for more than 7 years now, and my experience is that customers often expect you to deliver a marinated and well-seasoned piece, but usually give you the time for just a fastfood hamburger. So if you're facing an impossible deadline, you should jump over part of the recipe... I'd say: skip the research. Interviewing an expert who thoroughly knows the target audience and the topic is much more efficient than losing yourself in piles of irrelevant details and unnecessary information. And there's a higher chance you'll pick out the right message. If you're limited in time (and which copywriter isn't?), cut down your number of ingredients the beginning.
